Maine's coastline was shaped during the Ice Age. When the glaciers melted, they released water that had been locked away as ice for thousand of years . The ocean began to rise, drowning the coastline. The 1,100 or so coastal islands that , under glaciers, were part of the mainland are now the tops of partly submerged hills. The largest is Mount Desert Island. The northern half of Maine, bordered by Canada, is home to the French Canadians, the state's next largest ethic group. In the 18th century, Acadians, people of french descent from Nova Scotia, settled in the valley of the St. John River. French Canadians migrated from Quebec after the Civil War to work in the growing lumber and textile industries. White pines were once Maine's greatest forest resource. By the middle of the 19th century most had been cut down to make masts for sailing ships. Today's white pines are mostly second-and third-growth trees. From the forests come paper bags, cardboard boxes, wood pulp, and paper. Canoes, ice-cream sticks, skis, and more toothpicks than from any other state also originate in the northern woods
